Since I became a Mum what I wear and how I look and feel in my clothes has never been more important. I want to look good, I want to feel comfortable, warm and not worried about ruining ‘my best’ if it gets food smeared on it or chocolate wiped on it by Poppy and Caspar. Yet for me being comfortable still means I want to look fashionable. I have therefore perfected a selection of go to outfits that suit me, fit and work if I need to roll around on the floor with the children or if we’re going out for lunch.
I tend to favour the same stores having shopped around for years and knowing which brands stock clothes that are good quality and suit me. I also am a super casual dresser, its jeans, jeans, jeans for me and I rarely venture in to wearing anything else. You’ll have to invite me to your wedding if you want to turf me outta denim, darling!
My changing shape since having the twins means I don’t want to draw attention to my Mummy tummy, so I avoid elasticated waists, polo or turtle necks as these add bulk. In terms of jeans, whilst I do have a love of skinny jeans, straight cut are the most flattering for my shape. When I do wear skinnies, I learnt from my very talented, stylist buddy, Becky Barnes, that I should roll them up a little and expose some ankle. The other gem that Becky taught me was how rounded toe shoes work with skirts and skinny trousers, whereas pointed shoes are more flattering with a wide leg trouser.
Mint Velvet is my preferred store for jewellery – their necklaces are great. Oasis for jeans and casual tops, then Warehouse or Boden for everyday separates. I do invest in really good coats, I rotate between a toffee apple brown Parka from Animal clothing, a black pure leather biker jacket from Mint Velvet and a cream, Mint Velvet long coat.
Here’s a selection of my current wardrobe favourites so you can see how I mix my outfits up but try to coordinate. You’ll notice they are all pretty simple, I dress them up with silver jewellery. The blue jeans are Lily by Oasis, the black jeans I actually picked up in Miss Selfridge. My favourite shops for shoes are Oasis and Dune for ballet shoes / flats, Superga for trainers (although the leopard print below are Dune) and then Mint Velvet for boots / smarter shoes. I have a selection of Breton tops, all from Boden.
Oh and excuse the super yucky carpet – its the original 1960s one that’s currently in our bedroom, remember we are still living in the house pre-renovation, so this is it warts and all!
